Conference No. 7 - How can life cycle assessment help the pharmaceutical industry develop more competitive, robust and sustainable processes through value‑chain partnerships?

Description

This presentation targets researchers and engineers involved in R&D, process development, and pharmaceutical manufacturing, who are required to balance performance, cost, and sustainability. Using concrete case studies, we demonstrate how a life‑cycle perspective can be applied to effectively reconcile these three criteria, which are often considered antagonistic. Opportunities for impact reduction are examined across the value chain, including material selection, supplier manufacturing practices, logistics optimization, process intensification, and end‑of‑life considerations. These levers highlight the potential for coordinated actions between suppliers and end users to support the decarbonization of the pharmaceutical industry. The presentation also illustrates that meaningful improvements can be achieved both in newly developed processes and in existing ones, through systematic impact assessment and the integration of sustainability principles into process development practices. In the context of increasing environmental and strategic constraints, the European pharmaceutical industry must reduce its reliance on virgin raw materials while improving competitiveness and sustainability in order to meet its objectives related to sovereignty and carbon neutrality. Everyone can contribute!
