The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the urgent need for equitable access to advanced therapeutics and vaccines globally, yet many low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) continue to face barriers such as limited technology, infrastructure gaps, and a shortage of skilled personnel. The WHO mRNA Technology Transfer Program aims to empower LMICs to independently develop and manufacture mRNA vaccines and therapeutics sustainably. In this session we illustrate a case study to showcase how Merck KGaA exemplifies this commitment through its collaborative partnership with Afrigen in South Africa, jointly optimizing manufacturing processes to meet GMP-ready standards and engaging in co-development initiatives. This integrated approach, combining product supply, technical expertise, and workforce development, is essential for establishing resilient, self-sufficient biomanufacturing ecosystems in LMICs, ultimately enhancing global health equity.
